Eleven members of the Kelton FFA Chapter participated in Wildlife, Entomology and Plant ID CDE’s this spring. Kelton students obtained knowledge and life skills that will be used in their education endeavors and future career success.
Kelton FFA practiced in many contests in the area. Kelton members participated in the Collingsworth NRCS, Angelo State Invitational, Tri-County, WTAMU, Clarendon College, Valley, and Hackamore Ranch Judging Contests.
Lesly Alvarado, Colton Galvez, Dulce Pena, and Hugo Rivera participated in the Wildlife CDE. The Wildlife CDE is a contest where students identify plants, animals, habitat management practices, safety, and game laws. The Kelton Wildlife team place 7th at the Region 1 Wildlife Contest held at the Matador Wildlife Management Area south of Childress.
The Kelton FFA Entomology team members are LeighAnne Cook, Jacob Maxwell, Brett Hennig, and Aliyah Lopez. In the Entomology CDE, students apply the fundamentals of entomology and develop skills in identifying common insects and their significance to people and agriculture. Four members of the Kelton FFA competed at the Texas Tech Area 1 & 2 CDE and placed 2nd in Area 1 and 5th overall. LeighAnne placed 4th in Area as an individual and 10th overall. Jacob placed 6th in Area 1 as an individual. The Kelton Entomology team qualified for the State Entomology CDE at Texas Tech. LeighAnne, Jacob, and Brett participated in this event and did well.
The four members of the Kelton FFA Plant ID team are Kaleb Kimbro, Makena Porter, Emily Cook, and Colton Galvez. Team members were very successful winning 2nd and 3rd in many practice contests as well as placing with high point individuals. Contestants identify samples of grasses, forbs, legumes, and woody plants and for each indicate length of life, season of growth, origin, and the economic values of species on wildlife and grazing. The Kelton Plant ID team competed at the State FFA Plant ID Contest and placed 4th in State. Kaleb was also recognized for being the 2nd High Point Individual in the State Plant ID CDE.
